[Photos by Patricia Chang] Perched prominently adjacent the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park, the Renzo Piano-designed California Academy of Sciences is a sight to behold from the outside, but inside, the museum offers a new perspective on the study of wildlife and natural history. The Academy is not just a museum, it’s a place where research on subjects ranging from geology to anthropology happens daily, and teams from the Academy get sent around the world to conduct research in their particular fields of study. The museum has been around since 1853, but the current iteration of the Academy looks nothing like the first. It took years of planning and millions of dollars to create the museum we see today, but the hard work seems to have paid off. The California Academy of Sciences has been a hit with wave of visitors and locals since the day the doors swung open on the newly rebuilt museum almost five years ago. Today, we’ll revisit why the Academy is such a celebrated cultural attraction.
For starters, here are a few intriguing facts about the Academy:
· It has the world’s deepest coral reef exhibit.
· Butterflies fly freely in an enclosed rainforest.
· The architecture is award-winning.
· You’ll get to experience what the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes felt like.
· The roof has sweeping views of the city.
· You’ll meet Claude, an albino alligator.
· There are penguins, and they’re adorable.
· The twisting ramp in the rainforest had to be designed by rollercoaster engineers.

The California Academy of Sciences is open from 9:30am to 5:00pm Monday through Saturday and from 11:00pm to 5pm on Sunday. There are special members-only opening hours and free days on selected Sundays.
